New Food While Traveling: Why It’s Our Favorite Part of Any Trip

One of our strongest family travel rules is simple: we never eat somewhere we could eat at home. No chains. No safe bets. When we travel, food is part of the adventure.

That rule guided every meal on our recent trip to Key West, Florida, where the island vibes are strong, the flavors are bold, and the chickens roam freely.

Breakfast in Key West: Blue Heaven’s Iconic Island Atmosphere

We started our mornings at Blue Heaven, a must-visit for breakfast in Key West. With outdoor and open-window seating, it delivers the relaxed island atmosphere Key West is known for. The casual setting invites you to slow down, enjoy your coffee, and ease into vacation mode.

Oceanside Dining at Southernmost Beach Resort Cafe

For open-air dining with ocean views, Southernmost Beach Resort Cafe was a standout. Oceanside seating, sea breezes, and fresh flavors made this one of our favorite spots to enjoy a meal while soaking in the scenery.

Fresh Seafood and Sailboat Views at Conch Republic Seafood Company

At the Conch Republic Seafood Company, located right on the pier, we watched sailboats come and go while enjoying some of the best seafood in Key West. I ordered the catch of the day, mahi-mahi, my personal favorite.

This was also where I finally tried conch fritters, a Key West classic. Crispy, savory, and worth the hype. To drink, I sipped a key lime pie margarita, a must-try for anyone who loves creative vacation cocktails.

And yes, chickens casually wandered by during the meal, which is completely normal in Key West.

Real Key Lime Pie in Key West

One thing we were determined to try was authentic key lime pie. The real thing is smooth, tangy, and perfectly balanced. Once you’ve had real key lime pie in Key West, the imposters just don’t compare.

Comfort Food With a Twist at Moon Dog Cafe

At Moon Dog Cafe, we ordered truffle mac and cheese, which was rich and indulgent. Truffles were new and interesting for us, making this a fun way to try a new flavor without stepping too far outside our comfort zone.

The drinks were just as memorable. I had a blackberry lemonade that was fantastic. My son ordered a watermelon lemonade, which was good, but we all agreed the blackberry lemonade stole the show.

Coconut Shrimp and Cocktails at the Seaside Cafe at the Mansion

Another highlight was the Seaside Cafe at the Mansion. We shared parmesan truffle fries and coconut shrimp with piña colada sauce, an unforgettable combination.

I enjoyed a Bacardi mojito topped with rock candy, while my daughter ordered a Miami Vice. Both drinks were refreshing, fun, and perfect for a warm Key West evening.

Why We Love Trying New Food When Traveling

One of the things we enjoy most about traveling is trying new food. Exploring local flavors helps us experience a destination more fully and creates memories we talk about long after the trip ends.

From fresh seafood and island cocktails to real key lime pie and unexpected chickens underfoot, Key West reminded us why food is such an important part of travel.

Sometimes the best souvenirs aren’t things you pack, but flavors you remember.

My Suggestions If You’re Considering Traveling to Key West.

Of course, we did so much more than what I have shared here. There is so much to see and do that we didn’t have time for it all. If you’d like to learn more about Key West, check out visitfloridakeys.com.

If you are open to a jet ski tour around the island, I highly recommend Barefoot Billy’s. We were all new to jet-skiing, and the guides were friendly and patient. It was definitely a trip highlight.

We stayed at the Southern Most Beach Resort because we wanted to be on the quieter, family side of the island. We were impressed with the size and amenities the resort had to offer. There were a few restaurants, as well as two coffee shops on site! I loved having that convenience. I also appreciated how the resort kept us informed about daily activities via text. They were quick to respond to any questions I had. The resort was beautiful and well-kept. I’d gladly stay there again.

Here’s a super website for an easy-to-follow recipe for a Miami Vice to give you some island vibes while you’re at home! If you don’t have one yet, this cocktail mixer set makes mixing drinks (and iced coffees) so much easier.
